They started out as average, unexceptional men of their time: fishermen, farmers, local magistrates. But their dedication to a prophetic Jewish preacher in the backwaters of the Roman Empire transformed them into revolutionaries and, in the process, changed the world itself in ways that would reverberate across time for two thousand years.
Now, discover the extraordinary untold stories of the men chosen by Jesus to bring God's plan to the world. Among them are Peter, who denied Christ three times but later became a "Rock"; James and John, the fiery tempered "sons of thunder"; Matthew, the tax collector later murdered by cannibals; Simon the Zealot, the anti-Roman fanatic eventually "cut to pieces" preaching in Spain; and Judas Iscariot, whose betrayal would be paid for with silver and suicide.
From their early fear and discouragement at the shock of the Crucifixion, to the final acceptance of the resurrection and their epic mission to spread the Gospel through the known world, it's an inspiring, astonishing story of the little-known men who became The Twelve Apostles. Narrated by Martin Sheen.

Video Librarian - May/June 2000
Beginning with an exploration of the religious/political events surrounding the Roman occupation of Palestine, this excellent A&E production briefly covers the birth of Jesus, the first century emergence of John the Baptist, and the selection of the Twelve Apostles (even Galileans, one Judean), before taking a longer look at the Biblical accounts of Jesus’ acts and his relationships with the apostles. The presentation really reaches its stride with its coverage of the post-Crucifixion period, during which Christianity began to coalesce and emerge from a post-pentecostal Judaic movement called “The Way” into full-fleged Christianity. The video offers an exciting glimpse into the lives of the apostles – including the “replacement” apostles – and their missionary works, and devotes significant time to the conversion of Paul, and his subsequent deeds and missions, as well as his role and influence in the institutionalization of the sect that became Christianity. Much of this information has been culled, by means of judicious analysis, from an important body of literature known as the “apocryphal acts of the apostles.” Featuring characteristically superb narration by Martin Sheen and compelling live action reenactments, the program also employs a wide range of art masterpieces to illustrate its story. Extremely informative, useful, and accessible to a wide variety of age groups, this exceptional documentary is highly recommended.

Eclectic Homeschool Online 2005
Originally produced in 1999 for The History Channel and narrated by Hollywood star Martin Sheen, The Story of the Twelve Apostles is a reverent and faithful account of the lives of the dozen "average, unexceptional men" whom Jesus handpicked to carry the gospel into the known world of the first century A.D. This full-color, 100 minute DVD relies on the Bible as well as traditional Church history, secular historical accounts, and archeology to paint vivid pictures of these men: "Peter, who denied Christ three times but later became a `Rock'; James and John, the fiery tempered `sons of thunder'; Matthew, the tax collector later murdered by cannibals; Simon the Zealot, the anti-Roman fanatic eventually `cut to pieces' preaching in Spain; and Judas Iscariot, whose betrayal would be paid for with silver and suicide." The show is available in DVD or video format for the same price. This makes for excellent family viewing, and is a fine "extra" for your ancient history or Bible studies.
