Inspired by a true story.

Dan and Barbra Williams (Jim Burns and Perry Smith) head out of town for a weekend in the woods, an anniversary gift from their daughter. They've been married for years, but the flame has gone out of their marriage. Instead, lie bitter feelings of animosity and plans for divorce, hidden from everyone but themselves.

When rain forces them both inside, their attention turns to an old journal filled with the memories of previous visitors. These entries take Dan and Barbra on a journey of the heart. From the blissful passion of a newlywed couple to the wounded heart of an elderly man, Dan and Barbra find that the love they lost needs only to be rekindled. Recommended for married couples, not for family viewing.

Inspired by a true story, this dramatized half-hour-shy film revolves around Barbra (Perry Smith) and Dan Williams (Jim Burns), an unhappy couple given an anniversary gift by their daughter: a weekend getaway to Cabin 6, deep in the California woods. Thanks to rain, the couple are forced to spend time staring at the fire, contemplating their impending divorce. Desperate for something to do, they begin to leaf through a weathered journal featuring entries left by previous visitors -- touching memories that are reenacted here. As the weekend unfolds, Dan and Barbra's relationship gradually undergoes some important changes and the film ends on an optimistic note. With its woodland setting, sensitive acting, and effective photography, Cabin 6 (winner of various film festivals) not only offers a touching story about relationships, but as a project completed in four days -- with a skeleton crew and a barebones budget -- this might also appeal to budding filmmakers. DVD extras include audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, a visual effects montage, and a photo gallery. Recommended.

  • Libraries Alive - Fall 2009

The raw emotions of a couple who have plans, known only to them, to divorce are evident as they arrive for a stay at a cabin in the woods, an anniversary gift from their daughter. They soon discover there is a spark of romance left in their relationship as they are forced to stay inside for three days because of inclement weather. Cameo appearances by people from the cabin's visitor journal help to enhance the powerful message of the film which is to cherish the time we have with the ones we love. Inspired by a true story, the writer actually visited a cabin in the woods in Arkansas that had a journal where those staying in the cabin would write their memories for future visitors. For those whose religious beliefs prohibit the consumption of alcohol, there is a brief scene where there are two glasses of wine on the table. Rating: 4

  • Congregational Libraries - Second Issue, 2010

After years of marriage, Dan and Barbara are ready to call it quits. However, their daughter has given them a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods as their anniversary present, and the two find themselves alone during a rainstorm with only an old journal left by previous visitors. Touched by the stories, they are able to find the magic they once had in their relationship and begin again. This short film is perfect for married couples. The cinematography of the flashbacks captures the loving relationship of another young couple going to the cabin and the loneliness of the husband returning after his wife's death. The extra features on the DVD are interesting, especially the behind-the-scenes footage of the young crew discussing the making of the film.
