Editorial Reviews

Two animated tales for children are presented on this single DVD. Both stories play out against the backdrop of the drama of Jesus' last week. As the stories develop, the drama of Easter, of course, becomes the story. In "The Easter Promise," a young boy learns important lessons about good and evil, trust and forgiveness. Soldiers, animal antics, and affecting musical numbers add to the appeal. "The Witness" imagines the criminal Barabbas at the trial of Jesus, when Barabbas was given his freedom in lieu of the innocent Jesus. In this tale, Barabbas at first assumes the so-called Son of God must be a lunatic and a liar. The curiosity Barabbas feels about Jesus becomes a vehicle for telling the story of Jesus' life on earth, as Barabbas seeks out those who knew Jesus, including his mother Mary, the disciples, Lazarus who was raised from the dead, and others who had encountered Jesus. Young viewers will witness, along with Barabbas a telling of some of the miracles Jesus performed.

The Easter Promise and The Witness were created and directed by Angela Ward Costello. Jerem, a little boy in The Easter Promise, watches events in the life of Jesus. At first, he is disappointed and feels tricked that someone said Jesus was a king. Eventually, Jerem believes in Jesus. Barabbas, the murderer released by Pontius Pilate, stars in The Witness. At first, Barabbas, is belligerent toward Jesus. He visits Peter, a disciple of Jesus, and Mary, the mother of Jesus. Barabbas believes. Violence plays a major role in The Easter Promise. Some frightening scenes are expected with the death of Jesus. At other times, the addition of scary situations does nothing to advance the story. The Witness starts with a disclaimer, "We know many people witnessed the death and resurrection of Jesus. We don't know what happened to Barabbas but he could have been a witness." Barabbas asks excellent questions of Mary, and then of Peter. Their answers defend the faith in a form that wold be most useful for someone seeking the truth, but who had hard questions.

- The Easter PromiseThe Witness

I've been surprised by how well my students have responded to this DVD both 4th and 5th graders and 2nd graders. They hold the kid's attention and get the relevant points across. They'd be perfect if they cut down on some of the singing. Kids these days do not seem to respond when characters in a story randomly break out in song and it would shorten the length as we're always pressed for time on Sunday mornings. This age group tends to roll their eyes at Veggie Tales and Bed Bugs and finding videos that capture their attention can be a challenge. This one works!

The Witness is is an EXCELLENT video! We haven't seen the Easter Promise. . . someone gave us this on VHS a decade ago and it has become a treasured family favorite. Our oldest child became a Christian after watching it. Creatively put together reasonably accurate in it's portrayal of Scripture captivating thought provoking engaging . . . excellent!
