An invaluable tool
Some how Torchlighters was able to cram the gems of Aylward's story into 30 minutes that my 5-year-old just loves! I was really pleased with the quality and scope of this video. There are even bits of accurate Mandarin thrown in to the pleasure of those whose children know or are learning Chinese. Now I must try to get the entire series!
Utilice esta historia para el enfasis misionero con mi grupo de niñas. Les encantó. El formato, las enseñanzas bíblicas y la valerosa vida de Gladys Aylward. Un material que todo maestro debe considerar
Perfect tool for the Chinese Church
This past weekend I had an experience of showing The Gladys Alyward Story that I wanted to share with you. Our family has been serving the Chinese church that meets at our church building. They had special services for the adults and my daughter (14) and I did a children's program. These are Chinese American children who were born in the U.S., but go back and visit relatives in China. I showed the video about Gladys Aylward. We talked about some of the history of China and how many of the Chinese characters (how they write words) use God and reflect the Scriptures. I asked them what things Gladys, a Westerner, would have found very different from her homeland. We talked about how God loves China and called people to go to China. I asked them how it felt to know that Christians love the land of their families and go there to tell the people about Jesus (Yesu Jedu) - they pondered it and then smiled. The Gladys Aylward and Eric Liddell stories are perfect for Chinese American kids.
About Using Torchlighters
Torchlighters DVDs and study guides are top notch. I can't wait to start showing and teaching them. When we are finished, I am considering putting together a special program in front of the church with the kids about the Torchlighter series. I am not sure what that will be yet, but one thing I know is that because of the wonderful teaching guides you have provided, I have time to do things like this. Torchlighters is going to be the springboard for many exciting things our children will get to experience and share and I want to thank you again for creating such an amazing program of such quality. Everything is so well thought out and the artwork is beautiful. I know the parents will immediately see that we have chosen an exceptional program and the kids will be thrilled to see the posters start going up around the church.
True to details
My wife and I have been Children's missionaries for more than 25 years. We are always looking for new stories to use in our ministry. We came across this website as we were preparing for an upcoming missions conference. We have read the amazing story of Gladys Aylward in several books. While the video doesn't give all the details of Gladys' journey, what it does share is accurate and true to the details we've read. We'd highly recommend using these videos, but we'd also recommend that you read the stories of these missionaries for yourself as you prepare to teach about them. You'll be inspired and challenged in your walk with the Lord.
Just a quick note to say thank you so much for producing these DVD's!! Our 3 children (aged 6, 4 and 2) watch them constantly and it cheers our hearts to hear them play Amy Carmichael rescuing Preena instead of Cinderella and Snow White! (in fact our 2 year old son goes around the house yelling, "let me go, let me go!" which he learned from that movie!). We wanted something in our home that would enrich our children's lives and give them missionary hearts, and these movies do that perfectly. We have recommended them to all the families we know who have children. We are already looking forward to John Wesley!
My wife and I watched the Gladys Aylward Story [on TBN] until the end. Tears came to our eyes. These are powerful dramas. I didn't think I could ever be so affected by an animation. Bringing these stories to life is an incredible service to the church. I find myself wondering why I don't recall ever hearing of these three heroes of the faith that Torchlighters brings honor to. Thank you.

Our family has watched your DVD's for years and we have been SO blessed by your materials!! We are so grateful that you've provided a Christian look at history, showed us stories of brave Christians, and built our faith — one episode at a time. The newest addition to the outstanding Vision Video series "The Torchlighters: Heroes of the Faith" is "The Gladys Aylward Story," a 30-minute animated video for children ages 8 through 12 that presents a true account of a Christian missionary who helped more than one hundred Chinese orphans to escape the onslaught of the Japanese when they swept through China in 1940 massacring whole populations in their conquest. Gladys Aylward embarked with the orphans upon a one hundred mile trek over the mountains of China to a safe haven. With only her determination, faith, and commitment to those children entrusted to her care, Gladys Aylward was able to accomplish one of the truly legendary rescues of World War II. This superbly recorded DVD is enhanced with English and Spanish languages with optional English subtitles, and is enhanced for the viewer with the additional inclusion of a documentary featuring biographer Carol Purves and Gladys' adopted son, Clifford Liu. A comprehensive leader's guide with lesson plans, background information, reproducible student handouts, and more make "The Gladys Aylward Story" ideal for home schooling and church schooling curriculums. The Torchlighters video series is a series of animated DVD’s dedicated to “Highlighting the honor, integrity and life-changing experiences of those well-known and little-known Christian men, women and children who in response to God’s call, dedicated their lives to a life of whole-hearted commitment and passionate service to Jesus.” It is a production of Christian History Institute along with International Films and Voice of the Martyrs. The first in this series was The Jim Elliot Story and this was followed by The William Tyndale Story, The John Bunyan Story and The Eric Liddell Story. The fifth entry in the series is The Gladys Aylward Story. Much like its predecessors, this video gives a half-hour animated look at the life of a Christian hero. It is targeted at children from ages 8-12. It focuses on Aylward’s perilous 100-mile trek to rescue orphaned children from the ravages of the Japanese Army. It challenges children to understand what God can do through a Christian devoted to following him at any cost.
I’ll admit that, though the animated video was enjoyable, I preferred the hour-long documentary included in the DVD’s extras. Prepared, I believe, specifically for this project, it provided a very enjoyable and informative overview of Aylward’s life. Her story is one that is well worth telling. This is a great addition to the DVD and one that extends its value. http://www.challies.com/music-movies/dvd-reviews
