Elizabeth's sister, Julie, visits Hope Valley in her quest to become a teacher, but it's a lot more difficult than she imagined. Meanwhile, Abigail and Bill leave Hope Valley to attend Gowen's trial, leaving Lee in charge of the town as Sheriff. Carson begins to notice a few patients come in with a mysterious illness that he can't seem to treat.
In the midst of all his, even more trouble is brewing for Hope Valley. Mr. Weston, from the railroad, has said that the railroad is no longer going to build through the town. Abigail is desperate to convince the railroad to rethink their decision and build the depot in the town. Their future depends on it. Only together can the citizens of Hope Valley survive the many challenges of living on the Canadian frontier.
