Description

What about the hotly debated issue regarding the Christians roots of the American colonies? Was the Gospel the basis of the formation of a nation like none other in all history? What role did faith and religion play in the founding of America? From the earliest settlers in Jamestown, through the fervent patriotism of the pre-Revolutionary period, and the eventual formation of the original colonies into the United States of America, this documentary examines the religious and spiritual roots of the men and women who founded our country.

Editorial Reviews

Is America really special? Are our Christian roots something to cherish, or expunge? Is the Gospel of Jesus Christ relevant to the formation of nations? This 2002, 59-minute documentary explores the roles faith and religion play in the founding of our country. Using interviews from a variety of sources, Saints & Strangers details the earliest settlers in Jamestown, the Mayflower Pilgrims and other Puritans, the fervent patriotism of the pre-Revolutionary period, and the formation of the original colonies into the United States of America. It includes excellent footage of the oldest churches in the land, breathtaking examples of faith-inspired architecture. Further, this documentary examines the religious and spiritual roots, or the lack thereof, of the men and women who founded our country. The DVD addresses religious influences from the Mayflower to the Great Awakening, from Plymouth Rock to the War of Independence. It examines the groups of the faithful who were crucial influences during the colonial period - the Church of England, the Puritans, Baptist, Quakers, and others. It also includes obvious opinions on Native Americans, on the importance of religion in life, and the influence of religious groups on the New World. A FamilyNet Home Video, the DVD provides a good overview that will hopefully encourage further study. It includes English subtitles, chapter titles, and a study guide in pdf format. - Good

Good documentary on the overview of the founding faith of our country. Fair and balanced. Good for the historian or those who want to know about our religious roots.

- Excellent

This was a good history lesson and a visual walk-through of the places where our country was founded. It helped me better understand what our forefathers believed and how the early faiths were defined. I was amazed to find out that the Quakers were the "charismatics" of their day. Today we see them as pious and pure, not being of this world. It made me want to visit some of the areas in Massachusetts and Virginia and even Philadelphia. This video would be great for homeschoolers!

- Saints and Strangers

This would be an excellent video for history teachers to show to students when teaching the Colonial period.

- "The History of America"

Great footage and collected dialog depicting our nation's birthing and decline up to the present. How religion and God has played the most important backbone of our foundation and how various people and power groups have single handedly torn down our rich Christian foundation. A movie that kids and adults of America should see. Just to get a handle on their own roots and how it's being ripped apart.
