Description

Opening the Door To Luther -- Public television travel host Rick Steves takes us to areas of Germany known as Lutherlands, from Eisleben, where Luther was born, to Wittenberg where he taught and preached, and to several other areas, we learn about the tumultuous events of the Reformation and the monk at the center of it all. We see how this Augustinian monk, who most wanted the quiet of a religious life, was thrust into the center of 16th-century world-shaking events.

Morning Star of Wittenberg: Life of Katie Luther -- This documentary provides an intimate look at Katharina von Bora, former nun, 16th Century entrepreneur and wife of Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation. It is an in-depth look at the life of the woman who helped Luther change the course of history. We learn how she coped with incredible demands and survived the continual onslaught of unpredictable developments. We see how she became a capable manager carrying major responsibilities with and for her famous husband.

Narrated by Jutta F. Anderson and featuring the insights of noted Katharina experts Dr. Kirsi Stjerna, Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and German theologian Dr. Martin Treu, Curator of the Luther Museum in Wittenberg, the
Morning Star of Wittenberg sheds light on this often overlooked partner in the Reformation.

- Very Watchable

Katie... the two narrators are fun to listen to with their German accents. Both enjoy talking about Katie. The first five minutes give you more information about her than I remember ever learning in a book. So don't let anyone talk during those first minutes or you miss the best part. Martin Luther... Rick Steves has good things to say and the sites are very well photographed. But his voice is choppy and he drops the end of his words, so you almost have to already know what he is going to say. Everything is very fast paced. I also could not tell if the church services were Lutheran or Catholic and they do not tell there are many similarities. Not clear enough that Christ's works merit our salvation for us that gets brushed aside when we simply say it is a free gift. I do highly recommend this set of videos.
