The viewer almost becomes part of the team in energetic search for evidence of the location of the ancient Biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
To some skeptics the Biblical tale of the two "sin cities" is metaphorical, but Sanders’ belief — possibly supported by new evidence derived from NASA satellite photography showing anomalies on the floor of the Dead Sea — is that the cities not only existed, but their location might be found today. It took years of negotiations for Sanders to obtain clearance from the Israel army, the Jordanians and the Palestinians to search for the ruins at one of the most tension-packed places on earth. However, limited access was permitted, and we join the dive to the sea floor to uncover some compelling evidence buried in the salt. The search is still not over but the initial evidence that the program presents could mark a critical step forward.

This compelling documentary blend the history associated with the Ark of the Covenant with the ancient legends that have led scholars and researchers in a variety of directions. The male narrators offer a story that is faithful in presenting complex theories in an understandable manner. Historian and researcher Mike Sanders travel to the Middle East to find the missing Ark. His belief, possible supported by new evidence, is that the original tablets of the Ten Commandments can be found in the foundation deposits in a temple constructed by a pharaoh in the Middle East. Visuals include maps, illustrations, on site video, and a creation of museum props that keep interest high. A clever use of black-and-white video denotes past efforts, while color footage point to later and modern-day developments. Teachers will appreciate the quality narration and high interest setting. High school students in history, humanities, or sociology classes will find this video applicable to their curriculum. The blend of the old and new makes it a timely addition for public library history and contemporary interest collections. Highly recommended for public libraries and school media centers.

For centuries, scholars, adventures, and others have searched for the ark of the covenant and the stone tablets inscribed with the original Ten Commandments. Archaeologist and biblical scholar Mike Sanders, host of this slightly sensationalized yet interesting program, claims to have solved the missing ark puzzle. Cameras follow the charismatic Sanders and he treks across Egypt to match reference in ancient text to artifacts in temples and museums. Past theories about the disappearance of the holy relics are seen in dramatic reenactments and Hollywood movie clips. Eventually, the host, climbing through temple ruins, finds a corner stone that appears to have a hidden chamber; however, local authorities stop him from excavation the site. Although results are inconclusive, this remains a fascinating documentary.

One of the last unexplored places on earth, the Dead Sea presents logistical problems for submarines, while international tension block exploration, creating frustration for would-be explorers. Anyway, what's there? The mineral-heavy waters are incompatible with life (hence the name) and the sea floor was assumed to be flat... until space photography picked up some anomalies. Mike Sanders thinks these "anomalies" might be the remains of Sodom and Gomorrah, even though many biblical scholars believe the cities to be metaphors for evil. Gaining permission to use the research submarine Delta to explore the Dead Sea's depth, Sanders' journey is recorded in a suspenseful and engrossing manner, with stunning nature photography providing some thrilling eye candy both above and below the surface. Unfortunately, many viewers are going to feel a bit cheated when the expedition is cut short and evidence of the cities turns out to be inconclusive. If you are looking for affirmation of literal biblical interpretation, the "unsolved mystery" will disappoint. But if you want to take a unique trip to the bottom of the Dead Sea, this is the ticket for an entertaining and informative ride.
