Description

The amazing story of missionary Maria Prean is told in this award-winning documentary by Janina Huettenrauch. Maria was 60 years old when she decided to start a new life. She moved from Austria to Uganda, a country with more than two million orphans. Seeing the great need, she began caring for these children and building schools and orphanages. Despite great challenges, her strong faith and conviction helped her to change the lives of thousands of young Ugandans.

To build a bridge between Africa and the Western World, she started a children's choir at one of her schools. She and 15 children toured Europe for three months, touching the lives of many people they met along the way. This is an encouraging and very personal film about a woman who dreamed the impossible, then trusted God to do everything necessary to see it become reality. Some segments in German with English subtitles. Widescreen.

Editorial Reviews

This film will give you a desire to fly to Uganda and to help there too. Prean’s passion and professionalism come through in equal measure. So, if you want to see what you can build at the age of 60 years, you should not miss this documentary. I can highly recommend this film to everyone. It will break down some prejudices about Africa and allow you to see how God works even today.

"Maria Prean - Life gets better and better" touchingly shows with a little bit of humor, how "loving your neighbor" can make a difference in lives of thousands of people. The film is suitable for individuals and small groups who want to learn about sustainable development assistance or are looking for a project to support. Maria Prean encourages the individual to follow his calling. As Maria says, "I know now that I'm doing exactly what God has created me for"

-Pro-Christian Media Magazine, Germany

At the age of 60, instead of retiring to a cozy life in her home in Austria, Maria Prean moved to Uganda as a caregiver missionary. Now 70, she shares her story of heeding God's call to care for children in this impoverished country. The team she went with, supported by the Anglican church in Europe, has impacted the area greatly by building orphanages, schools, and churches, with plans to build boarding schools, an agricultural complex for vocational studies, and a conference center. Anyone can learn from Maria's youthful spirit, servant's heart, and love for all those around her.

Overall, this documentary is well produced. The dialogue is mainly in German with English subtitles. This DVD would be a great addition to church and Christian school libraries as proof that it's never too soon or too late to serve the Lord at home or abroad.

Lots of people talk about living each day as if it were their last, but Maria Prean actually does. Janina Huettenrauch's inspiring documentary follows the work of Prean, who at age 60 left her native Austria in 1994 for a Christian mission in Uganda, where she remains today. Moved by the hardships of poverty and hunger suffered by millions of children, Prean led the charge in building schools and residences for several thousand orphans, finding key allies in an Anglican bishop, master builders, military leaders, and the nation's First Lady. Over time, Prean added a vocational school and developed a vision for an economically efficient community with shops and services that would keep people employed. Much of the film finds Prean hard at work while also governing a volunteer staff involved in everything from treating an epidemic of scabies among the kids to laying cable for the community's internet access. The second half of the documentary follows a childrens' choir from Prean's school that tours Europe, performing before appreciative audiences. This meeting of cultures is truly heartwarming to see, but the real lesson here is that one person can do so much good in the world through determination and persistence. Highly recommended.

- Maria Prean

I really enjoyed this documentary on Maria's mission work to Uganda. It was exciting to see the impact she has in that country and on the lives of thousands of orphans. It is so inspiring to see how God can use a life dedicated to Him! And personally I found it very encouraging that she did not begin this ministry until she was 60 years of age!

What an amazing movie. She was an awesome person and to make such changes at the age of 60. She was so inspiring to me. The things you can do when you are being used by the Lord. And how she has changed the lives of thousands of Ugandians. The children's choir is so beautiful. And the love she has is truly touching.
