Carlos Caterpillar: Topsy Turvy - A Lesson in Responsibility is a short, enjoyable, 25-minute DVD suitable for ages 4 to 10. This 3-D animated video uses colorful, Spanish/English speaking insects to tell the story of Carlos, a caterpillar. Carlos decides he would rather do what he want s to do, than what he is supposed to do. In a dream, Carlos sees what happens when everyone in the community does what they feel like. His teacher decides to become a rap star, the construction workers sit around playing cards, and Carlos' dad spends his days practicing martial arts. Carlos seeks the wisdom of his wise uncle to teach him about responsibility.
The DVD demonstrates the character trait of responsibility without referencing the Bible or Christianity. It teaches that we are all part of a community, and each must do his own job, as there are others depending on us. My children did walk away from the DVD with this understanding. We also discussed how this worked in families too, that we must each do our chores and work together to get things done. The colorful insects with Spanish accents were able to keep my children's attention throughout the 25-minute program. The music is upbeat but does not overwhelm the program...
