Editorial Reviews

Part of the "Torchlighters" series of animated DVD's spotlighting the struggles of real-life Christian heroes throughout history, The William Book Story is a brief biography of WIlliam Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, who incurred the wrath of the alcohol industry (and hired thugs!) When he sought to bring relief to London's suffering poor, and salvation to all. Booth and his followers armed themselves with Bibles, musical instruments, and faith in God against their opposition, and put their lives on the line for not only their Christian beliefs, but also to improve the living conditions of their fellow human beings around the world. A host of special features round out this engaging cartoon, including an abridged documentary from the program "Our People: The Story of William and Catherine Booth", a comprehensive leader's guide with lesson plans, and reproducible student handouts. Highly recommended especially for Church DVD library collections and as a part of Sunday School curriculums. English and Spanish with English subtitles, 30 min. plus extras.

This animated feature from the YA-aimed Torchlighters series traces the origins of the Salvation Army, providing interesting background information about the organization—familiar to many through its resale stores and the ubiquitous bell-ringers and collection kettles that appear every holiday season. The story goes back to London's rough-and-tumble East End in the mid-1800's, when William Booth preached salvation and sobriety, arousing the ire of pub owners. Following parallel paths, two central figures here are disaffected Londoners—a boy who exchanges loot from his pickpocketing adventures for a glass of beer, and his doppelganger elder, a lost soul facing the gallows as a result of an empty life of sin—ultimately changed by faith in God. Although threatened with violence from those who opposed his work, Booth called his army of followers to a different sort of arms—wielding Bibles, love, forgiveness, and music—eventually creating a worldwide phenomenon that continues to this day, with the Salvation Army taking on contemporary issues such as human trafficking and slavery. DVD extras include a leader's guide with lesson plans, handouts, and discussion materials. Highly recommended.

- About Using Torchlighters

Torchlighters DVDs and study guides are top notch. I can't wait to start showing and teaching them. When we are finished, I am considering putting together a special program in front of the church with the kids about the Torchlighter series. I am not sure what that will be yet, but one thing I know is that because of the wonderful teaching guides you have provided, I have time to do things like this. Torchlighters is going to be the springboard for many exciting things our children will get to experience and share and I want to thank you again for creating such an amazing program of such quality. Everything is so well thought out and the artwork is beautiful. I know the parents will immediately see that we have chosen an exceptional program and the kids will be thrilled to see the posters start going up around the church.

- The William Booth Story

Loved the video and intend to buy it for all our grown children's families. What a courageous Christian Booth was to leave a comfortable preaching position to reach the unsaved in the East End slum of 19th century London. God worked mightily through this man and his wife's faithfulness to bring the Gospel. The beautifully animated movie about the beginning of the Salvation Army shows the power of Christ to radically change peoples' lives and to set their destinies on heaven!

- The William Booth Story

Thank you for your new DVD, William Booth! My children love it and can't wait for the other new ones to come out. My 5 year old boy said about William Booth - "This is the best Torchlighters! There are good guys and bad guys. And in the end one of the bad guys reads the Bible and learns about God." Of all their videos, the Torchlighter videos are my childrens' favorites! THANK YOU for making these ministry tools! We are missionaries in South America, and we really appreciate you putting the videos in Spanish. May God continue to bless your ministry!

- Heroes of the Faith

We are saving William Booth and the Salvation Army until December, hoping to collect money to take to a "bell-ringer" in our neighborhood after we see his story. We thank God for the creative staff that put this series together. We recommend it for Sunday school, VBS, or week night programs. We have even thought that adults would benefit and lively discussions would follow classes using the series!

- Favorite Children's Series!

This is my favorite children's series, bar none. I think that my wife and I enjoyed the DVD's as much as the children. Please produce more of these!

- TorchlightersWilliam Booth Story

This an excellent portrayal of the facts.

- Torchlighter Series

Just a quick note to say thank you so much for producing these DVD's!! Our 3 children (aged 6, 4 and 2) watch them constantly and it cheers our hearts to hear them play Amy Carmichael rescuing Preena instead of Cinderella and Snow White! (in fact our 2 year old son goes around the house yelling, "let me go, let me go!" which he learned from that movie!). We wanted something in our home that would enrich our children's lives and give them missionary hearts, and these movies do that perfectly. We have recommended them to all the families we know who have children. We are already looking forward to John Wesley!

- Torchlighter Series

Our family has watched your DVD's for years and we have been SO blessed by your materials!! We are so grateful that you've provided a Christian look at history, showed us stories of brave Christians, and built our faith — one episode at a time. And we thank you for stepping up to do this and providing excellent children's DVD's — a very rare thing indeed!
