Editorial Reviews

Part of the Torchlighters animated DVD series created to spread the word about real-life young adult Christian heroes and heroines throughout history, The Corrie ten Boom Story tells of a girl and her family who risked everything—and paid a tragic price—to do what was right. Corrie's family were Dutch Christians and skilled at repairing watches. But when the Nazi's invaded and spread their genocidal policies, the ten Booms risked everything to protect Jewish refugees, acquiring extra ration cards to feed them, hiding them in their home, and helping them escape deportation to the Nazi death camps. Their nobility and defiance caused them great suffering when a Dutch informant betrayed them to the Nazis. The family was arrested and imprisoned; Corrie's elderly father died ten days later, and her sister Betsie eventually died in the Ravensbruck concentration camp. Other members of the family were released, and Corrie herself was given freedom in December of 1944 due to a clerical error. After the war, she created a rehabilitation center in the Netherlands, and continued to work for just causes for as long as her body lent her the strength to do so. Highly recommended.

What a POWERFUL animation of a true story. Here are a couple of things about this film that I loved:

The statement, “The Good Shepherd gave His life for the sheep, shall we do any less for His chosen people.”

No matter what happens, even the most difficult of situations, God is ALWAYS with us.

I didn’t realize how strong Corrie’s sister really was. What an amazing example of a true Christian.

Powerful forgiveness in the midst of such terrible treatment the sister showed and Corrie shows many years later.

The fleas/lice story and thanking God for them and finding out later WHY they were truly indeed a blessing for the prisoners. This was my favorite part of the film and really showed I Thessalonians 5:18 – In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

The sister’s attitude – “I’m ready, Thy will be done” – Over 15 years ago, Roger gave me a cartoon of a bunch of cattle on the way to a slaughterhouse and while everyone else was afraid, one of them was relaxed and had a silver reflector as if to get a suntan on the way to his destruction. This is the type of peace that God can provide for us in any and all situations.

The quote from Corrie Ten Boom, “God does not have problems, only plans”. What a family, what a woman, what faith. I pray that we will all show this kind of faith and trust in God.

This film we highly recommend, for children too, but watch it with them so you can answer their questions about the holocaust.

As a child, I learned forgiveness from Corrie ten Boom's story. Years later I would need to practice that very thing when we were held hostage in the jungle. I am grateful for her example and life!

- Great DVD

The Corrie ten Boom Story is the newest addition to the Torchlighters series. For those who may be unfamiliar, The Torchlighters series is a series of short animated movies that introduces young viewers to men and women from Christian history. These movies are great for families to introduce many figures from Christian history to their children in a way that is fun for the kids. The Corrie ten Boom story drops the viewer into the middle of World War II and does a good job of showing how Nazi Germany truly despised others. One soldier makes a statement that shows the hatred when he says that "you have to get rid of the bad to salvage the good." This is exactly what the Nazi's thought they where doing by slaughtering so many Jews, and this is where the story takes us. We get introduced to the ten Boom family and get to see how God used this family and their watch repair shop to help so many people. The ten Boom family begins to help these Jewish people because they find out that "the rumor is they are being rounded up and......exterminated." Their reasoning is stated very clearly "The Good Shepherd gave His life for His sheep. Can we do anything less for God's chosen people?" So, the ten Booms used code words to bring Jews who needed protection into their "hiding place", referring to needy people as "watches." The story continues to follow Corrie and her family as they are found out by Nazi soldiers and thrown into a camp. Corrie and her sister show amazing courage throughout this time, even when they deal with doubt. Corrie prays a pray at one point saying "We have done what we thought was your will. Help me to trust that you have not forgotten me." What a wonderful prayer for young minds to hear in a video as they watch the one praying that pray suffer in a concentration camp. So many details from the life of Corrie ten Boom made it into this short 30 minute video.
The video ends with Corrie being released and immediately going back to help everyone that she can and traveling around to tell her story. This is one of the more difficult stories to tell to younger children simply because it is so full of hate and death, but I feel that there is a good balance and presentation in this movie. The recommended age range is 8-12 and I think this is a good age to be able to have healthy conversations with kids about man's depravity and the evil that exists in our hearts. It also shows that God can use any situation to get glory and use it for the good of His children. I would highly recommend this video to any Christian parent looking for ways to introduce their children to men and women in Christian history. I received a free copy of this DVD from Vision Video in exchange for an honest review.

- Very Well Done!

Just watched this on Amazing Discoveries, and am so impressed! An excellent way to share this story with kids. Thank you for a job well done!

- Torchlighter Series

Just a quick note to say thank you so much for producing these DVD's!! Our 3 children (aged 6, 4 and 2) watch them constantly and it cheers our hearts to hear them play Amy Carmichael rescuing Preena instead of Cinderella and Snow White! (in fact our 2 year old son goes around the house yelling, "let me go, let me go!" which he learned from that movie!). We wanted something in our home that would enrich our children's lives and give them missionary hearts, and these movies do that perfectly. We have recommended them to all the families we know who have children. We are already looking forward to John Wesley!

- Torchlighter Series

Our family has watched your DVD's for years and we have been SO blessed by your materials!! We are so grateful that you've provided a Christian look at history, showed us stories of brave Christians, and built our faith — one episode at a time. And we thank you for stepping up to do this and providing excellent children's DVD's — a very rare thing indeed!
